오직 믿음으로 구하고 조금도 의심하지 말라 의심하는 자는 마치 바람에 밀려 요동하는 바다 물결 같으니 (약 1:6)

As a child I often played a game with friends in which one player would be trying to find someone or something. The rest of us would try to guide the "seeker" by saying how "warm" or "cold" they were getting. The closer they got to the target, the "warmer" they would be; but when they started to stray in the wrong direction, we'd warn them that they were getting "colder." 

어릴 때 나는 한 명이 누군가 혹은 무엇인가를 찾아나가는 놀이를 친구들과 자주 했습니다. 우리 나머지는 어떻게 "따스함"이나 "차가움"을 얻게 되는지를 말해줌으로 "찾는 아이"(seeker)를 안내하려고 애씁니다. 그들이 목표물에 더 가까와짐에 따라 그들은 "더 따뜻해"(warmer)집니다. 그러나 잘못된 방향에서 방황하기 시작하면 우리는 그들이 "더 차가워"(colder)지고 있다고 경고합니다.

Sometimes we try to play that game with God. We pray for guidance, but what we really want is God's support for something we already have in mind. When it seems God is helping us toward our desired outcome, we cheer him on: "Warmer --- warmer!" But when it seems he is veering away from the goal we want, we warm, "Colder --- COLDER!"

때때로 우리는 하나님과 그런 놀이를 하려고 합니다. 우리는 안내해 주시기를 기도합니다. 그러나 우리가 정말 원하는 것은 우리가 우리 마음에 이미 가지고 있는 무언가를 하나님께서 지지해 주시는 것입니다. 하나님께서 우리가 바라는 결과를 향해서 우리를 도와주시는 것처럼 보일 때 우리는 하나님을 응원합니다. "더 따뜻해 --- 더 따뜻해!" 그러나 하나님께서 우리가 원하는 목표물로부터 방향을 바꾸시는 것 같을 때, 우리는 "더 차가워 --- 더 차가워!"라고 경고합니다. 

When it comes to praying for guidance, prayers like that are just plain backwards. We're not really asking God to guide us; we're asking God to let us guide him. Instead of looking to serve God, we're really trying to get him to serve us.

안내해 주시기를 기도할 때 그러한 기도들은 단순히 퇴행하는 것입니다. 우리는 진정으로 하나님께 우리를 안내해 주시라고 구하는 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 우리가 하나님을 안내하도록 하라고 하나님께 구하는 것입니다. 우리는 하나님을 섬기려 하기보다는 실제로는 하나님께서 우리를 섬기게 하려고 애쓰는 것입니다.

James warns against this role reversal. When we ask for God's guidance, we must have his goals in mind, not ours. And we must ask and believe that God will answer. We must steer straight to avoid being tossed about by the wind. 

야고보는 이러한 역할이 뒤바뀌는 것을 경고하고 있습니다. 우리가 하나님의 안내를 구할 때, 우리는 우리의 목표물이 아니라, 하나님의 목표물을 마음에 두어야 합니다. 그리고 우리는 하나님께서 응답하실 것을 구하고 믿어야 합니다. 우리는 바람에 의해 뒤집히지 않도록 똑바로 운행해야 합니다.  

When you ask God to guide you, are you looking in his direction?

여러분은 하나님께서 여러분을 안내하시도록 구할 때, 그의 방향을 바라보고 있습니까?

PRYER (기도)

God, what we need is for you to lead us. Please help us to get that straight. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

하나님, 우리에게 필요한 것은 주께서 우리를 인도하시는 것입니다. 그것을 명확히 하도록 도와주세요. 예수님 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
