“Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”(Philippians 1:1-2).

“하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 평강이 너희에게 있을지어다”(빌립보서 1:1-2).

For several Christmases when she was little, our youngest daughter would glue together Styrofoam cups and bowls, wrap them, 

and place them under the tree as gifts. Her eyes would dance with joy as we each unwrapped our special gifts. What we were truly privileged to receive, though, was the joy of her heart! 

우리 집 막내딸은 어렸을 적에 몇 해동안 크리스마스 때마다 일회용 스티로폼 컵과 접시와 대접을 접착제로 붙여서 그것들을 포장한 후 크리스마스 트리 밑에 선물이라고 갖다 두곤 했습니다.  우리가 받는 그 특별한 선물의 포장을 뜯을 때마다 막내 딸의 두 눈은 기쁨으로 춤을 추곤 했습니다. 그렇지만, 우리가 진짜 받아 누린 것은 막내딸의 마음의 기쁨이었습니다!

God delights in giving us his grace and peace. Grace is the announcement that God remembers our sins no more. Peace is the declaration that “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”(Romans 8:1). Though we deserve anger and punishment, God delights to embrace undeserving sinners. 

하나님은 우리에게 그의 은혜와 평화(평안)를 주시기를 기뻐하십니다. 은혜는 하나님이 우리 죄를 더이상 기억지 않으신다는 선언입니다.  평화는 “이제 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 자에게는 결코 정죄함이 없다!”(롬 8:1)는 선포입니다. 비록 우리는 진노와 형벌을 받아 마땅하지만, 하나님은 무자격자들인 죄인들을 기쁘게 끌어 안으십니다.

Paul speaks for many of us when he calls himself the “worst of sinners”(1 Timothy 1:16). We may painfully recall bad choices and their shameful consequences. Sometimes we work overtime to hide our sins. Often we may be overwhelmed by fear of future judgement. It doesn’t have to be like that. The gifts of grace and peace turn the “worst of sinners” into “saints in Christ Jesus.” 

바울은 자기를 “죄인 중의 괴수(딤전 1:16)라 칭했는데, 그 말은 우리 중 많은 사람을 대변하고 있습니다. 우리는 잘못된 선택들을 고통스럽게 떠올리고 그 선택에 따르는 수치스러운 결과들을 회상할 수 있습니다. 때때로 우리는 우리의 죄악들을 감추기 위해서 과로하기도 합니다. 종종 장차 받을 심판에 대한 두려움 때문에 풀이 죽을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 반드시 그와 같을 필요는 없습니다. 은혜와 평화(평안)의 선물들은 “죄인 중의 괴수”를 “그리스도 예수 안의 성도들”로 바꾸어 놓기 때문입니다.

God delights to bind us together in a relationship of joy! No wonder Nehemiah once told God's people:

“Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome…” (Nehemiah 4:14). 

Can you imagine the Lord’s eyes dancing with delight as he offers grace to sinful hearts and peace to restless souls? 

하나님은 우리를 기쁨의 관계 가운데 함께 묶어주시기를 기뻐하십니다! 언젠가 느혜미야가 하나님의 백성들에게 이렇게 말했다는 것이 전혀 놀랍지 않습니다. “지극히 크시고 두려우신(멋진) 주를 기억하라...”(느 4:14). 죄로 괴로운 마음에 은혜를 주시고 쉼없는 영혼에게 평안을 주시면서 기쁨이 흘러 넘치는 주님의 눈빛이 상상이 되십니까? 

Prayer (기도)

Dear Lord, though I have not seen you, I love you, and I am filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy for the gifts of grace and peace. Thank you, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

사랑의 주님, 제가 비록 주님을 친히 뵙지 못했지만, 제가 주님을 사랑합니다. 저에게는 은혜와 평화의 형언할 수 없으며 영광스러운 기쁨으로 충만합니다. 예수님의 이름으로 감사드립니다. 아멘.
