Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail.... Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. - James 4:8-10

죄인들아 손을 깨끗이 하라 두 마음을 품은 자들아 마음을 성결하게 하라. 슬퍼하며 애통하며 울지어다... 주 앞에서 낮추라 그리하면 주께서 너희를 높이시라 (약 4:4-10)

Martin Luther struggled to understand the letter of James because he thought it contradicted Paul's letters. Of course, that was not the case. James can be off-putting in our day too, because of his gruff commands. But sometimes we can be too delicate, saying that God "suggests" ideas for our consideration, as if he were a shop-keeper eager to please a customer.

마틴 루터는 야고보서가 바울의 서신과 모순된다고 생각했기 때문에 그 편지를 이해하려고 애썼습니다. 물론, 그것은 사실과 다릅니다. 야고보의 거친 명령 때문에 우리의 하루가 기분 나쁠 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 고려해야 할 내용에 대해, 마치 고객을 만족시키려고 안달이 난 상점 주인 마냥, 하나님께서 우리에게 아이디어를 "제안" 하듯 말씀해야 한다면 그것은 우리가 너무 예민하다고 할 수 있습니다.

We need to accept James for who he is ㅡa New Testament prophet inspired by the same Spirit as the Old testament prophets and Jesus himself. Then we will find treasures in his brief letter that will strengthen our relationships with God and with others.

우리는 구약 선지자와 예수님 자신처럼 같은 성령님의 감화를 받은 신약 선지자로 야고보를 받아들여야 합니다. 그의 간략한 편지에서 우리는 하나님과 타인들과의 관계를 강화해 주는 보석들을 발견할 것입니다.  

Sitting under James's teaching is like drinking from a fire hose. One relevant theme after another gushes forth: overcoming troubles in life, avoiding hypocrisy in our faith, taming the tongue, putting an end to quarreling, ensuring healthy employer-employee relationships, bringing peace where there has been strife and disorder.  

야고보의 가르침을 받는 일은 소방 호스에서 물을 마시는 것과 같습니다. 관련된 주제들이 연이어 터져 나옵니다. 그 주제들은 인생의 어려움 극복하기, 신앙의 위선 피하기, 혀 길들이기, 다툼 끝내기, 건강한 노사관계 확보, 분쟁과 무질서가 있는 곳에서 평화 가져오기 등입니다. 

The letter of James is like a summary of the Old testament Law and the prophets, proverbs, and the New Testament Gospels. Ponder its unforgettable words in your heart!  James is a good place to continue the lifelong quest of learning to relate to others.

야고보서는 구약의 율법, 선지서, 잠언과 신약의 복음서를 모두 요약한 것 같습니다. 마음 속의 그 잊을 수 없는 말씀들을 깊이 생각해보십시오. 야고보서는 평생 계속되어야 할 타인과의 관계 배움에 관한 탐구를 위한 좋은 곳입니다.

Lord, our God, we ask that you lift us up, for we have stumbled in so many ways. Lead us by your Spirit in the way everlasting, through Jesus. Amen.

우리 주 하나님, 여러 면에서 실족한 우리를 일으켜 세워 주시기를 기도합니다. 예수님을 통해서 성령으로 영원한 길로 우리를 인도하옵소서. 아멘.
