You do not even know what will happen tomorrow. - James 4:14

내일 일을 너희가 알지 못하는도다 (약 4:14) 

My kids and I like to watch a TV show about unsolved mysteries and hunts for lost treasure around the worlds. Sometimes it's just fascinating to learn about faraway places and people and events we have never heard about before. But sometimes the unknown can be a bit frightening. As the host of the show crawls through tight tunnels and scrambles through ancient ruins, the unknown can be a little scary.

아이들과 저는 해결되지 않은 미스터리나 전 세계의 잃어버린 보물 찾기에 대한 TV 프로그램을 즐겨 시청합니다. 이제껏 들어본 적도 없는 먼 나라의 장소나 사람들, 또는 모르고 있던 사건에 대해 알게 되는게 그저 흥미롭기만 합니다. 하지만, 미지의 세계는 우리를 다소 놀라게 할 수 있습니다. 프로그램의 진행자가 좁은 터널을 기어다니거나 고대 유적지를 바삐 돌아다닐 때면, 미지의 세계가 약간 무섭게 느껴지기도 합니다.   

James says that we don't know what will happen tomorrow. That's true, of course. The future is wholly unknown to us. We can plan and think that we know what we will do, but in the end, all of our planning and hoping about the future doesn't promise anything. Even the best laid plans can fall apart. We simply don't know what the future will hold. It is out of our control, and that can be frightful.

야고보는 우리가 내일 일을 알지 못한다고 말씀합니다. 물론, 맞는 말씀입니다. 미래는 우리에게 완전히 미지의 세계입니다. 우리가 할 수 있다고 알고 있는 것을 생각해보고 계획할 수는 있지만, 결국, 미래에 대한 우리의 계획과 소망은 아무 것도 약속해주지 못합니다. 아무리 잘 세운 계획도 산산조각이 날 수 있습니다. 미래가 어떻게 펼쳐질지에 대해서 알지 못합니다. 미래는 우리의 통제 영역 밖이며, 그런 사실이 끔찍하게 여겨질 수 있습니다. 

But what isn't frightening is knowing that God is in control. As Jesus says when he teaches his disciples how to pray - and James echoes that here - "God's will be done. So whatever fear you might have about the future, you can be assured that God not only knows what will happen but is also in control of it.

하지만 두렵지 않은 것은 하나님께서 모든 것을 주관하신다는 사실을 알기 때문입니다. 예수께서 제자들에게 기도하는 법을 가르칠 때 '하나님의 뜻이 이루어지이다"라고 말씀하신 것처럼, 그리고 오늘 본문에서 야고보는 주의 뜻이 이루어질 것을 언급합니다. 그리고 하나님의 뜻은 이루어질 것입니다. 따라서 여러분이 미래에 대해 어떤 일이 일어날 지 알고 있을 뿐 아니라 그 미래를 주관하심을 확신할 수 있습니다. 

God holds us in his hands. We don't need to fear the unknown.

하나님이 그분의 장중에 여러분을 붙들고 있습니다. 우리는 미지의 세계에 대해 두려워 할 필요가 없습니다.

PRAYER (기도)

God of the future, help us not to fear what is to come. Help us to remember always that you hold the unknown in your hands. Amen.

미래를 주관하시는 하나님, 다가올 일에 대해 두려워하지 않게 하소서. 미지의 세계를 하나님께서 주관하고 계심을 언제나 기억하게 하소서. 아멘.
