Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. ㅡ James 5:4

보라! 너희 밭에서 추수한 품꾼에게 주지 아니한 삯이 소리 지르며. (약 5:4) 

James has a sobering massage for people who hold positions of leadership in the workplace. On the surface, it might seem as if he is saying that financial success is wrong. But wealth is neither good nor evil; it's how we gain and use our wealth that counts.  

야고보는 직장에서 지도적 위치에 있는 사람들에게 바른 메시지를 전합니다. 겉으로 보기에, 재정적 성공이 잘못된 것이라고 그가 말하는 듯이 보입니다. 그러나 부는 선하지도 악하지도 않습니다. 문제는 어떻게 벌었고 어떻게 그 부를 사용하는가 입니다.  

When sin tempts us to make the bottom line our top desire, work becomes only a means to padding our pocketbook. People become either objects for us to use, or obstacles in the way of growing our fortune. Perhaps we underpay our employees to keep more for ourselves. Maybe we deliver a subquality product or compromise safety standards to keep more money for ourselves. Some of us may know the inequality of working for a company in which low level employees are downsized out of work while top level executives leave the company with a golden parachute.  

우리의 최상의 욕구로 근본을 이루도록 죄가 우리를 유혹할 때, 일은 우리 공부를 부풀리기 위한 수단이 될 뿐입니다. 사람들은 우리가 이용할 대상이 되거나, 우리의 재산을 불리기 위한 길의 방해물이 됩니다. 아마도 우리는 더 가지기 위해서 종업원들에게 급료를 적게 지불합니다. 아마도 우리는 내 주머니를 불리려고 저질의 상품을 제공하거나 안전 기준에 타협을 합니다. 회사의 중역들은 큰 돈을 챙겨 유유히 회사를 떠나지만, 낮은 직종의 종업원들은 인원 감축으로 직장을 떠나는 직장의 불평등을 우리 중 어떤 이들은 알 것입니다. 

If you are in a position of leadership at work, know that God's Word urges us to asses our priorities and structures in the workplace. Are we treating employees fairly? Do we treat those who work for us as people and not merely as cogs in a machine? If you experience injustice in the workplace, be assured that your cries reach the ears of God, and one day God will make things right.     

만약 여러분이 직장에서 지도적 위치에 있다면, 하나님의 말씀이 우리의 우선 순위와 직장의 구조를 평가해 보도록 우리에게 촉구한다는 사실을 아십시오. 여러분은 종업원을 공평하게 대우하십니까? 만약 여러분이 직장의 불의를 경험한다면, 여러분의 울부짖는 소리가 하나님의 귀에 상달되어, 언젠가 하나님께서 모든 일을 바로 잡으실 것이란 사실을 확신하십시오.   

PRAY (기도)

Merciful God, we thank you for hearing the cries of all who are treated unfairly. Help us reflect your justice and mercy in the way we treat people who work for us, and help us endure unfair treatment till you make all things right. Amen.

자비로운 하나님, 불공정한 취급을 받는 모든 이들의 울부짖음을 들으시니 감사드립니다. 우리를 위해 일하는 사람들을 처우할 때, 주의 공의와 자비를 반영하게 도우소서. 그리고 주께서 모든 일을 바르게 고쳐 잡으실 때까지 불공정한 처우를 견딜 수 있게 도와 주옵소서. 아멘.
